In Dandadan, urban legends come to life. The story follows two high school students, Momo Ayase and Ken Takakura, who have opposing beliefs—Momo trusts ghosts but dismisses aliens, while Ken is obsessed with aliens but denies ghosts exist. Their rivalry leads them into eerie and dangerous encounters, kicking off an adventure they never expected.
Meet the Main Characters:
Momo Ayase: She’s not your damsel in distress! Momo is strong, independent, and has a powerful spiritual connection. She has the ability to channel the power of spirits, giving her incredible fighting abilities.
Ken Takakura (Okarun): Okarun starts off as a shy and nerdy guy, but he undergoes a major transformation early in the series. Due to a curse, he gains the ability to transform into a powerful Yokai. While he struggles to control it, he is a valuable ally to Momo.
What Makes Dandadan Special?
A Mix of Everything: Dandadan isn’t afraid to mix things up. It combines horror, action, comedy, and even a little romance into one fantastic package. One minute, you’ll be laughing at a ridiculous situation, and the next, you’ll be hiding behind your hands during a terrifying scene.
Creepy Horror Elements: Forget about jump scares! Dandadan’s horror comes from the unsettling designs of its Yokai and aliens. These creatures are truly the stuff of nightmares. But even these villains have backstories that might make you feel for them.
Hilarious Comedy: The humor in Dandadan is quirky and offbeat. It might not be for everyone, but if you enjoy absurd situations and witty banter, you’ll love it.
Girl Power! While Dandadan is a shonen-esque story (aimed at young men), it breaks away from many of the typical tropes. Momo is a strong and capable character, and the story doesn’t shy away from giving female characters important roles. Dandadan is published in Shueisha’s online-only Manga Plus series, which gives the author more freedom to tell the story they want without the restrictions that regular Shonen Jump manga might have.
Wholesome Characters: Dandadan excels at creating characters that are relatable and likable. Even the “bad guys” often have understandable motivations, making them more than just simple villains. No one ends up being particularly unlikeable. It is truly amazing when an author can make you feel for a villain.
Dandadan is a wild, unpredictable, and ultimately heartwarming story about friendship, courage, and accepting the unbelievable. If you are looking for a manga that is different from everything else out there, give Dandadan a try! You might just find your next obsession.
Dandadan Manga Reviews:
Dandadan combines horror, humor, and wholeness. a story about two friends on a mission to exorcise Yokai and defeat aliens.
Dandadan is wholesome in its portrayal of characters; no one ends up being particularly unlikeable. Even the “villains” of the story have good motivation. It is truly amazing when an author can make you feel for a villain.
The horror elements are so creepy and unique to this sort of action manga. Yokai and aliens resemble something out of your nightmare. which makes them excellent villains but also feels extra harsh when you hear their backstories.
Comedy is subjective, and you will have to read the manga to see if you like this sort of humor.
Also, there is some real girl power here. This is definitely a shonen-esque story, but it’s not limited to typical shounen cliches. This is because, unlike typical Shueisha manga, which gets printed in Shonen Jump, this is their online-only manga plus series. This gives authors more freedom to tell their stories.
